'We are offered almost 4,000 lines, which have been supplied with a critical apparatus, commented upon, and translated into English. Besides Philip's Garland, the editors have included many other epigrams by poets who wrote between 90 B.C. and A.D. 40, so that a comprehensive corpus of epigrammatic poetry of the late Hellenistic age is now available. The Introduction is chiefly devoted to the vexed question of how Philip's Garland was constituted. (...) The part of the Introduction which I have found most useful is the one devoted to the metrical features of the epigrammatistst: here scholars have an invaluable survey at their disposal, which will be particularly useful for textual and literary investigations. (...) From my brief observations it will, I hope, appear that there is very much to be done in order to understand and correct the texts which the two editors have now placed at our disposal: their edition will serve as a welcome startingpoint for the investigation of late Hellenistic epigrammatic poetry.' (GIUSEPPE GIANGRANDE in The Classical Review (New Series), 1973, pp.136-8). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover.
