In den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten ist der therapeutische Aspekt des nachklassischen Philosophierens in der Antike zunehmend in den Vordergrund der Forschung gerückt. Doch blieb Cicero hier meist außen vor, da sein Werk als kompilatorisch und eklektisch galt. Dabei hat Cicero eine ausdrücklich als philosophische Seelentherapie angelegte Schrift verfasst: die Tusculanae Disputationes. In dieser Neuinterpretation der „Gespräche in Tusculum“ zeigt der Verfasser, wie das leitende Motiv – die Seele in Ordnung zu bringen, sie zu heilen – die gesamten fünf Bücher der Schrift durchzieht. Cicero lehnt sich dabei formal an seinen Lehrer Philon von Larisa an, der ein Schema entwickelt hat, wie der Philosoph als Arzt wirksam sein kann. Inhaltlich folgt Cicero weitgehend der Stoa. Der Band belegt zudem, wie Cicero dabei der akademischen Skepsis und der Redekunst verpflichtet ist und wo er die Grenzen einer an stoischen Prämissen orientierten Seelenheilung sieht. € 49.50 (New)
