KRIETER-SPIRO, Martha,
Sklaven, Köche und Hetären. Das Dienstpersonal bei Menander. Stellung, Rolle, Komik und Sprache.
Teubner, Stuttgart / Leipzig, 1997. XVI,329,(18)p. Cloth. Spine and front cover (water)stained. Inside fine and clean. Personal summary from WGA loosely inserted. Diss. Universität Basel. Series: Beiträge zur Altertumskunde, 93).
'Krieter-Spiro examines from the point of view of social status, dramatic function and language the characters of Menander's plays who provide services of one kind or another, as slaves or for hire, for the upper-class characters. Well aware of the problems of fragmentary evidence, she analyses first under each heading the four best preserved plays, Dyskolos, Epitrepontes, Aspis and Samia, using the smaller fragments to check the conclusions derived from these four plays. The focus is deliberately on Menander, to establish a basis for comparison; earlier comedy, tragedy, philosophy and the Latin adaptations are touched upon occasionaly. The result is largely to confirm that the subordinate role of the 'Dienstpersonal' in the plays reflects the society of Menander's Athens as seen through the eyes of the upper classes.' (J.C.B.
