AMMANN, A.N.,
-Ikos bei Platon. Ableitung und Bedeutung mit Materialsammlung.
Paulusdruckerei, Freiburg Schweiz, 1953. 270p. Sewn. Small personal library mark and name on free endpaper. (Rare).
‘The greater part of this book, consisting of 429 articles on the –ikós words in Plato, is an important contribution to Platonic lexicography. The articles are constructed on a standard pattern well suited to this group of words, and emphasis is laid on passages in which words are explicitly or implicitly defined by Plato himself. The material presented is not, however, lexicographically self-sufficient (…). There is a difference between explaining the semasiological relationship of a given –ikós word to its cognate words and explaining how the word is actually used. Ammann fulfils the former task generously, the latter only in part…’ (K.J. Dover in The Classical Review (New Series), 1955, p.205-06). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover.
