TARN, W.W., and M.P. CHARLESWORTH,
Octavian, Antony and Cleopatra.
Cambridge University Press, London, 1965. XII,167p. Paperback.
This book covers the period of unrest and civil war that broke out in Rome after the murder of Julius Caesar and continued until the final defeat and death of Antony 14 years later. The authors have kept a judicious balance between the two sides in their narrative of events from Antony’s assumption of power, the establishing of the Second Triumvirate, the proscriptions, and the defeat of Brutus and Philippi, and continue up to Octavian’s final triumph over Antony at Actium. There is also the portrayal of Cleopatra, whom Tarn compares with Alexander the Great, ‘perhaps the only one of all his heirs whom his fire had touched’.
