Despite Momigliano's claim, for him the conflict between the antiquarian and the historian is not dead, for it is bound up in a complex way with the relation between sociology and history. A tradition, parallel with the main stream of classical historiography and traceable as far back as Hippias of Elis, runs from the 'érudits' through the writers of 'Altertümer' and the systematic studies of Mommsen and Max Weber to sociology. It is the fusion of these two traditions which produces good history. Gibbon's example is as relevant today as it has always been.
