The Civilization of Ancient Crete. Batsford, London, 1977. 279p. ills.(B&W photographs and line drwaings). Hard bound. Gilt titling on spine. Small personal library mark and name on free endpaper. 'This book is about Crete from the earliest (Neolithic) times until the Roman conquest. A few pages at the end continue the story to the present day. The first two-thirds (Parts 1 and 2) go down to the end of the Bronze Age. Part 3 deals with Dorian Crete, with chapters on Language and the Alphabet, Law and Custom, Society and Government, Artistic Renaissance, and Religion. This is a field which the author has made very much his own, with his books on 'Aristocratic Society in Ancient Crete' and 'Cretan Cults and Festivals', and his critical edition of the Gortyn Law Code, of which a translation is given here in an appendix.' (SINCLAIR HOOD in The Classical Review (New Series), 1979, p.330). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover. (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable) ISBN: 9780713408270
