Greek Papyri. An Introduction. Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1968. IX,220p. 8 plates, 2 maps. Cloth wrps. Wrps a bit worn, upper edge a little bit stained, but nice copy. 'The first general introduction to papyrology (…) since Schubart's Einführung in die Papyruskunde. (…). One of the author's aims is certainly to make available to the uninitiated the basic answers to the questions which they might ask about papyri and their study. (…) But another aim, no less important, is to ensure that the right questions are asked, and to suggest how the right kind of answers may be given, by those who have made rather more progress in the field. And here many (…) will find a most salutary corrective to some of their cherished, but never properly examined, presuppositions, and our successors may be able to avoid some of our grosser errors (…). Finally, it has often been stated (…) that the days of papyrology are numbered and that there are few texts still left to be edited. Turner (…) refutes this: there are, for example, as many Oxyrhynchus texts still to be published as have already appeared, and there is much more to be done than there are hands to do it for many years to come.' (B.R. REES in The Classical Review (New Series), 1969, p.97-98). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott. (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable)
