Aeschylean Drama. University of California Press, Berkeley (...), 1976. XI,239p. Cloth wrps. Gagarin begins his interpretation with certain important aspects of the Homeric and early Greek view of human behavior. He then moves to an analysis of the historical drama, 'Persae', showing how the play's dual perspective, Persian and Athenian, makes it simultaneously both a tragedy and a celebration. The heart of the book is the discussion of Aeschylus' masterpiece, the 'Oresteia'. Gagarin first s the operation throughout the trilogy of ethical forces in the universe and in human society, and examines how the forces in conflict at the beginning are eventually reconciles at the end. He then treats two important manisfestations of these forces, sexual conflict and political conflict, and shows how these two aspects of the drama are linked and how the conflicts within the mythical family of Agamemnon are resolved and made into a constructive harmony in contemporary Athens.
