Altogether the passages translated amount to 150 pages of an Oxford text; most of the best-known of Cicero's letters are included in whole or part. (...) W. has tried to get away from 'translation' English and to give the reader the same impression as ... a contemporary Roman would have received.' The result is a lively and racy style, full of colloquialisms (...). The scholar, however, who compares any few pages of the translation with the original will find much to criticize. (...)
