Greek Metre. Translated by Hugh Lloyd-Jones. Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1962. XII,116p. Original blue cloth. Spine gilt titled. 'Maas's 'aim is to provide a basis for study, not an encyclopedia. (…) His book discourages, and is meant to discourage, adventurous theorizing, but it provides an extraordinary stimulus to more detailed exploration of the history of the phenomena which he summarizes. Some of this work, notably on 'bridges', has been done, and more is in progress. The biggest and most difficult of the tasks not yet taken in hand is the devising of a terminology which will enable us to describe, with a completeness, precision, and clarity approximating to Maas's own standards, the metrical relation between every extant colon of Greek lyric poetry and the immediately preceding and immediately following cola.' (K.J. DOVER in The Classical Review (New Series), 1963, p. 311-13). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable)
