'Professor Gordon Williams, dissatisfied with the traditional sixth-form and undergraduate' commentary, which, while using the text as a means to teach a knowledge of Greek or Latin and of classical life, pays very little attention to the thought and artistique technique of the author, gave to the classical world in his 'Third Book of Horace's Odes (Oxford 1969) a new type of running commentary which went to the other extreme, and he replaced grammatical commentary which went to the other extreme, and he replaced grammatical comment with a fairly literal translation. Mr. Barsby follows his example in producing the first edition of a book of the 'Amores' to appear with detailed English notes. Within the limits he has adopted it is a pleasing and fairly satisfactory book. There is a good introduction dealing with (1) Ovid, (2) Love-Elegy (...), (3), the 'Amores', (4) Metre, (5) Style (...), (6) History of the text. (...) The running commentary is helpful and perceptive (...).This book fills a need that must be felt by all who give courses on Latin Elegy. (J.A.
