  • Macht und Kultur im Rom der Kaiserzeit. Bouvier Verlag, Bonn, 1994. 190p. ills.(B&W photographs). Bound with dust wrps. Series: Studium Generale, Band 16. Nice copy. (Rare). 'The quality of a collection of papers such as this tends to be uneven, but on the whole this is an interesting volume which has some good pointers for further research. The jewel in the crown is Gabba's contribution on 'municipia', written in characteristically sweeping style with no footnotes. He emphasizes the importance of the Social War in what he sees as the refoundation of the Roman state even thought the constitutional structure remained unchanged, and discusses the setting up of 'municipia' and their role in urbanization and in the organization of Italy. (...) Among other ntable contributions, La Rocca's examination of the world of imperial images, especially in the context of the imperial cult, touches on one aspect of the theme so powerfully expounded by Paul Zanker, whose 'Augustus und die Macht der Bilder' was originally published in 1987 (english translation, 1988). (...) Rosen contributes a helpful discussion of the mode of address used in the correspondence between Fronto and Marcus Aurelius, and by setting their relationship in its social and political context, examines the role of Fronto in shaping the opinions of the emperor.' (BRIAN CAMPBELL in The Classical Review (New Series), 1995, pp.474-75). With: N. HIMMELMANN-WILDSCHÜTZ: Römische Adler (pp.65-77). From the library of the late Professor Doktor Nikolaus Himmelmann. € 55.00 (Antiquarian) ISBN: 9783416023306
