On the one hand, Saake presents us with attractive analyses of ten of Sappho’s poems (Lobel-Page nos. 31, 1, 2, 5, 17, 16, 44, 95 and 94), followed by an excellent concluding chapter, ‘Kunstwürdigung’, which provides the best summary of Sappho’s art I have seen. On the negative side, though, one must cite his crabbed style, burdened with odd words and difficult constructions, along with too much parading of scholarship.’ (EDWIN D.
