Odysseen. Schwabe, Basel, 1988. 310p. Original green gilt titled cloth with dust wrps. (Rare thus). 'In his introduction T. starts from the self-evident 'übergreifende Einheit der homerischen Gedichte' and from the mass of internal contradictions and doublets. After a survey of the most important 'Anstösse' he says 'Bei einem Dichter, des seine Fähigkeiten ständig so vor Augen führt, sind sie unbegreiflich (...).' These doublets and 'Alternativen' are called 'Handlungsvarianten', which in themselves are a species of 'konkurrierende Varianten' (...). Almost all variants in the 'Odyssey' 'finden sich paarweise', and, consequently, the solution of the problem is that our 'Odyssey' is in fact a combination of two 'Odysseys, one older than the other, each of these a poetic unity. (...) Audiences got the impression that the various tales belonging to different poems went back to an original unity, and therefore at one time the poems were combined: 'So hätte der Redaktor schliesslich die nur virtuell vorhandenen Einheit der Odyssee 'wiederherzustellen' versucht. (...) A first weakness of T.'s hypothesis is that it moves the existence of 'Anstösse' from the stage of production by Homer in the period of orality to that of the Redaktor, a post-oralist. (...) The explanatory model in itself is too weak in relation to its results.' (D.M. SCHENKEVELD in Mnemosyne, 1990, pp.468-71). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable) ISBN: 9783796508714
