'This is not a volume about Roman villas in general (...), but about villas in Italy, or more precisely in central Italy (...), and within that limited area the author's focus is on the luxurious, oestentatious and often vulgar country mansions of the crème de la crème of the Roman aristocracy. But these are minor blemishes in a text which is wide-ranging in its scholarship and which displays equal deftness in deplying the literary as well as the archaeological evidence. Throughout M. is a sane, dependable and often enlightening guide through the cryptoporticus, peristyles and sumptuous halls of Italian villa architecture at its most elegant and spendthrift. M. has dug deep into the periodical literature and rescued from comparative oblivion (...); and especially welcome is the collection together in one volume of the ground-plans of these and other more familiar villas.'
