The Latin Love Elegy. Methuen, London, 1959. 1st ed. 182p. Cloth. Spine a bit discoloured. Library stamps on first pages. 'The genre discussed in this book is an extraordinary phenomenon: represented by only four poets of note, it flourished for a bare half-century and died without posterity - killed, as Lucks remars (p.38), by Ovid, who destroyed the mystery which was its essence. Little less extraordinary is the neglect of the genre as a whole by modern scholars. (...) to deal adequately with the Latin elegists calls for an exceptional combination of qualities, and Luck's attractive little books shows clearly that he possesses some of the most important: perception, sensitivity, imagination, a sense of humour.' (E.J. KENNEY in The Classical Review (New Series), 1960, pp.224-26). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable)
