A Dictionary of Medical Terms in Galen. Brill, Leiden (...), 1993. XIII,344p. Original red gilt titled cloth with dust wrps. Nice copy. 'Thanks to the efforts of J.-H. Kühn, U. Fleischer and their colleagues, since 1989 Hippocratic scholars have been able to benefit from the invaluable resource provided by the 'Index Hippocraticus'. The extent of the Galenic corpus makes it even more daunting to anyone intending to compile a concordance, but D. has here presented us with the next best thing: a dictionary for the genuine works of Galen, covering about 3,000 Greek words and giving 119,000 citations. It is, of course, a medical dictionary, which means that words of a more everyday character which nevertheless feature in Galenic medicine must be omitted. However, some entries are particularly thorough, bringing together many phrases which invite and suggest directions for further research (...). This is a well-conceived and highly valuable work, although of course it makes one long for a complete concordance, ideally with cross-references and including entries for proper names. Dream on; but this is as near to paradise as one can come within the constraints of the 'saeculum'.' (HELEN KING in The Classical Review (New Series), 1995, pp.139-40).
