Greeks, Romans and Barbarians. Spheres of Interaction. Batsford, London, 1988. 240p. ills.(linedrawings). Paperback. With signature from Prof. Carl Deroux on half title. 'Cunliffe's theme is the relationship between trade and socio-political development in the transformation of northern Europe by the cultures of the Mediterranean, during the millennium 600 B.C. - A.D. 400; he covers a geographical span from Catalonia and Etruria in the south, to Britain, Denmark and Germany in the north. HIs method combines discussion of selected sites and topics with the testing of a model of cultural transformation. The result is a lively survey and an excellent introduction to a complex subject, but not an authoritative guide to the present state of knowledge: that is perhaps an inevitable limitation in such an ambitious book, which tries to combine arcahaeology and history across some of the most active areas of modern research. (...) On almost every topic that C. touches, there is more to be said. But his book is a first sketch of a vast area, which will stimulate the student to follow the evidence where it leads, beyond the comfortable generalities of model building to the reality of historical archaeology itself. It is also a welcome sign that British archaeologists are taking notice of the importance advances made in the last two decades by their French and Italian colleagues.' (OSWYN MURRAY in The Classical Review (New Series), 1990, pp.343-45). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux. (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable) ISBN: 9780713452747
