'Surprising as it may seem, this is the first comprehensive examination in any language of the burial customs of the Greeks. The time covered is from the beginning of the Iron Age to the end of the Hellenistic period, and there is short account of Mycenaean practices too. Since the evidence, archaeological as well as literary, is very much fuller for Attica than for other places, this study is in two parts. Kurtz takes Attica, collecting the material with exemplary thoroughness, and I doubt if there is much that she has missed (...). Her interpretation too is exemplary for its caution. (...) For general readers Ch. VII is of special importance with its reconstruction of Attic funeral rites. (...) Boardman shows more dash in his survey of funerary evidence elsewhere. His collection of archaeological remains, though certainly less complete than Kurtz's, is a remarkable achievement and representative enough. He too is cautious in his judgements, Ch. XI on rites and offerings is a model of sanity on a topic that invites unprofitable speculation. (...)
