Archäologische Funde in Ungarn. Corvina, Budapest, 1956. 425p. Richly ills.(B&W as well as full colour photographs). Four folding maps. Original green gilt stamped cloth. Reading ribbon. Spine and part of cover a bit discoloured. A few light stains to spine and front cover. ‘In spite of the churlish assessment of Dio Cassius, a disgruntled former governor (Hist. Rom. XLIX, 36) Pannonia was a rich and important province of the Imperium Romanum. In Hungary, which covers the major part of this province, a deep-rooted patriotism engendered earlier than in any other East European country systematic research into the national history and archaeology. It is natural that in a country where Latin was the judicial language until far into the nineteenth century, Roman remains were eagerly studied. (…) The book (…) embraces all the ages from the Paleolithic to the Byzantine period. For each period a popular but concise and fully up-to-date characterization is provided by a specialist. Thus (…) the Celtic period is ably dealt with by E.B. Benin, the Roman occupation by the general editor, Edit B.-Thomas, herself. (…) For each section the general introduction is followed by a number of really splendid plates (…) giving a representative selection with a preference for unpublished or only recently published objects. (…) The text accompanying each single plate on the opposite page (never exceeding the space of one page) gives all the relevant dates and references about the item reproduced together with a commentary which, while in strictly popular language, very often summarizes up-to-date knowledge about complex problems with admirable concision (…) It is just this harmonious way in which here both the specialist and the amateur are well catered for which can be considered to be the outstanding merit of this volume.’ (A.A. BARB in The Journal of Roman Studies, 1957, pp.279-80). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable)
