XLIX, 36) Pannonia was a rich and important province of the Imperium Romanum. In Hungary, which covers the major part of this province, a deep-rooted patriotism engendered earlier than in any other East European country systematic research into the national history and archaeology. It is natural that in a country where Latin was the judicial language until far into the nineteenth century, Roman remains were eagerly studied.
