Le Journal-Épître d'Égérie (Itinerarium Egeriae). Étude linguistique. Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia, Helsinki, 1987. 177p. Sewn. Front cover slightly creased. Small stamp on lower part front cover. Series: Suomalaisen Tiedeakatemian Toimituksi Annales Academiae Scientiarum Fennicae, Ser. B, Tom. 230. (Rare). 'V., to whom we are indebted for standard works on Vulgar Latin, has now produced another: a masterly summary of the present state of knowledge on the 'Itinerarium Egeriae', especially its language and style. Einar Löfstedt's famous commentary remains the most stimulating introduction to the topic; but V.'s handbook is more systematic, and takes accoutn of the great body of work done since 1911on 'le premier texte latin connu qui vient de la plume d'une femme.' V. reacts against attempts to find too much literary flavour in Egeria. He remarks, characteristically, that 23.10 'animo sederit' will be a reminiscence of Vulg. Deut. 21:14 rather than Virgin. Though properly cautious on the question of regional variations in Vulgar Latin, he is impressed by the apparent Gallicisms in the 'Itinerarium' as well as by the apparent Hispanisms, suggesting that the author may have had a prolonged sojourn beyond the Pyrenees (...). This book will maintain its value for many a year.' (MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM in The Classical Review (New Series), 1988, pp.419-20).
