Xenophon on Government. Cambridge University Press, 2007. 1st ed. 242p. Paperback. Series: Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics. Nice copy. ‘This volume is a welcome addition to the Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics series, which hitherto has included no work from the prolific pen of Xenophon. Three roughly coherent works on different forms of governing have been included: Xenophon’s ‘Hiero’ and ‘Respublica Lacedaemoniorum’ and the pseudonymous ‘Respublica Atheniensium’. The volume has a general introduction followed by specific introductions to each of the three works. The commentaries centre on issues of philosophical and literary importance and include frequent translation of phrases and references to Goodwin’s ‘Greek Grammar’. Three appendices (…), a bibliography and brief indexes conclude the volume. (…) G. has written widely on Xenophon, particularly on his narrative technique, and though there are inevitably points with which one might disagree G.’s highlighting of issues of style in particular is most welcome. In its overall interpretation of the treatises, G.’analysis is less satisfying.’ (NOREEN HUMBLE in The Classical Review (New Series), 2010, pp.43-44). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux.
