Naissance des dieux et des hommes. Bibliothèque Historique. Livres I et II. Introduction, traduction et notes par M. Casevitz. Préface de P. Vidal-Naquet. Les Belles Lettres, Paris, 1991. XXX,239p. Paperback. Erasable pencil lines and a few pencil annotations in margins from CD. 'This book offers an Introduction, Translation, and Notes, and a Preface contributed by P. Vidal-Naquet is entitled 'Diodore et le Vieillard de Crète.'The allusion is to 'un gran veglio' in Dante's Inferno, XIV. 94-118, who turns his back on Damietta and looks rather to Rome; and for both Dante and Diodorus Rome was important. (...) V.-N. touches on the much-debated 'Quellenfrage' and regrets current failures to emulate the Sicilian's aims, particularly in the scant attention often given to the civilization of India and China. Michael Casevitz of Lyon, who is also one of the editors of the series to which the book belongs, is conscious of the limitations imposed by its restricted scope. The aim is to provide translations of works which have been unjustly neglected; his Introduction is accordingly brief, and the more detailed Notes are followed by a sketchy bibliography. (...) Within the limits set by the series C. has given us an agreeable study, especially in his Translation. His Notes, however, have to face a basic criticism in that he has failed to use several of the modern commentaries on relevant themes.' (J. GWYN GRIFFITHS in The Classical Review (New Series), 1992, p.182). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable) ISBN: 9782251339061
