Homers Ilias. Hard bound. Series: Spudasmata, Band 109. 'Scholarship, remarked Werner Jaeger, is little more than the extended shadows of a few great men. That remark of my teacher convinced me to devote the last 30 year to the publication of some twelve volumes of Wilamowitz' correspondence. They supplement his publications in all sorts of ways. (...) Colleagues have begun to edit the letters of others scholars. (...) There is another legacy of great scholars that has been regularly ignored: the preserved notes of their lectures taken by attentive students. (...) Such notes are filled with varied material and provide an invaluable supplement to his published work, as well as illustrating first-hand the way he taught. We have here an exemplary edition of the notes taken by a twenty-year-old Swiss student (...). The notes are accurate with extensive exegesis that clarifies what Wilamowitz says, provides his sources and gathers the later emergence of his ideas in his published works. I was amazed to see how much of his lectures surface in 'Die Ilias und Homer'. The similarity is remarkable not only in content but also in arrangement. (...) The edition is beautifully organised with exemplary annotation and will greatly ease the labours of subsequent editors of other notes, not to speak of Homerists interested in the history of their discipline. (...) The serious defect of the volume is the Editor's inexplicable decision to key Wilamowitz' references to scholars, ancient authors and subjects discussed to the original pages of Züricher's notes rather than to the pages of his own edition.'
