The Emperor Domitian. Routledge, London, 1993. 1st paperback ed. XI,292p. Paperback. Nice copy. 'The Emperor Domitian' is, above all, a useful book. The core consists of of four sets of double chapters on the Court, Administration, War and the Aristocracy. These contain, (...) prosopographical notices arranged in categories: relatives, 'amici', and freedmen (pp.33-71); a table of the evidence for Domitian's buildings and a discussion of the structures under the headings 'erected', 'restores', 'completed', and 'atrributed'(pp.82-94); a register of his named senatorial victims (pp.182-92). he notes direct the reader to a comprehensive range of scholarly treatments; the ancient literary and inscriptional references are helpfully given in the text. (...) Students and scholars have reason to be grateful to J. for providing such an up-to-date account of the evidence currently available and of the state of scholarship on Domitian, while avoiding the temptattion to defend too vigourously a figure in whom he has invested so much time and care.'
