A Selection. Edited by H. Maehler. Cambridge University Press, 2004. XI,279p. Paperback. pp.173-176 false-cut. Series: Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics. 'The book (...) presents a rich selection of Bacchylides' poems accompanied by a revised version of the commentary in the Brill edition [with German translation and commentary, Die Lieder des Bakchylides 1, 1982 + 2, 1997) - ND]. (...) Text and commentary are preceded by a general introduction and followed by a useful appendix listing all the vases to which the commentary refers. (...) The introduction proposes to English-speaking readers, in a slightly abridged form, the valuable discussions of language, prosody, metre and style, contained in the 1982 'Einleitung'. The paragraphs on style, in particular, offers a clear and reliable introduction to Bacchylides' use of epithets and to the narrative strategies adopted in the odes. In the section entitled 'Choral lyric poetry and its public'M. deals efficaciously with the complex relationship between poets, commissioners and public (...). A welcome novelty is the paragraphs on 'Festivals and games, focusing on the most relevant religious feasts in which choral performances took place and on the athletic competitions that triggered the request for epicinian odes. (…) |The critical text is substantially the same as the 2003 [his revision of Snell’s Teubner text - ND] and the 1997 edition. (…). The commentary to each ode is preceded by a short discussions of occasion and myth (…) M.’s reconstructions of the myths, based on systematic exploration of other poetic sources and of Archaic iconographical material, are exemplary. As for structure, M.’s primary aim is to highlight the well-balanced formal structure of the poems. (…) M. manages to collect a huge amount of valuable information about textual problems and about Bacchylides’ language and style.’ (ENRICO MEDDA in the Journal of Hellenic Studies, 2005, pp.160-161).
