Roman Papers: Volume III. Edited by A.R. Birley. Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1984. VIII,863-1558p. Original black cloth with dust wrps. Spine gilt titled. A.o.: The Crisis of 2 B.C. (pp.912-937); The March of Mucianus (pp.998-1014); How Tacitus Wrote Annals I-III (pp.1014-1043); Mendacity in Velleius (pp.1090-1105); Juvenal, Pliny, Tacitus (pp.1135-1158); Some Imperatorial Salutations (pp.1198-1220); No Son for Caesar? (pp.1236-1251); Governors dying in Syria (1376-1393). 'Age does not wither the tenacious memory of Sir Ronald Syme, nor his zest and perspicacity. The pile of his publications still grows every year, This volume contains his own selection of those which appeared in 1971-1981, to which must be added his 'Historia Augusta Papers (1983). Its contents are maily prosopographical, like those of the two preceding volumes. No other scholar has ever acquired so intimate a familiarity with the roman élite. He concentrates usually on individual persons; generalizations arise incidentally. His findings are not too easily accessible to those who do not share his expertise but may need to use them for other purposes. The index of proper names for all three volumes of the 'Roma Papers, compiled by Professor A.R. Birley, is thus in itself an important contribution to knowledge.' (P.A. BRUNT in The Classical Review (New Series), 1984, pp.349-350). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable) ISBN: 9780198148395
