Glossarium Epicureum. Edendum curaverunt M.Ggigante et W. Schmid. Edizioni dell'Ateneo & Bizzarri, Roma, 1977. XLVIII,873p. Hard bound with dust wrps. Spine gilt titled. Dust wrps to head spine a bit wrinkled. Series: Lessico Intellettuale Europeo, XIV. 'This is a document of the first importance for Classicists in general and students of Epicurus in particular. (...) This book is (...) a historical document as the editors readily admit. But it is still an extremely useful one. All the words, even particles, which Usener found in Epicurean authors, or which he considered were relevant to Epicurus are listed with full reference to their contexts. (...) Sometimes the references take a little tracking down. Those to Epicurus himself are easy since they are to the page and line of the 'Epicurea' itself (...). It is especially interesting to note how often the quotations in the Glossarium differ from the text printed in the 'Epicurea' and still commonly accepted. (...) The 'Index grammaticus (...) is full of useful notes on Epicurus' use of language and has apparently formed a convenient quarry for writers on Epicurean style (...). One gap is noticeable, the lack of any references to Diogenes of Oenoanda. (...) But in spite of this lack the present book, as the only one of its kind, will become an essential tool for all who propose to work on Epicurus and his school.' (C.W. CHILTON in The Classical Review (New Series, 1979, pp.322-323). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable)
