Its most striking feature is the weight put on Dionysiac ritual in satyr drama, and on other, particularly sacrificial, ritual performed or perverted in Cyclops. (...) This account, speculative though some of it must be, has many advantages over the purely theatrical and literary view of 'comic relief' (...) or simple burlesque of tragedy. (...) Argumentation is rich and impressive even if it may not always persuade the reader. S. argues that the satyrs are not merely balanced between sacred and profane, but retain traces of Dionysiac initiation. So on their makarismos at 495-502 S. remarks that the combination of wine and sex with religious language is not so much parody as an expression by the god's familiars of an easier hedonism than earthly initiates experienced.'
