Elegiarum liber secundus. Editidt M. Vetta. In Aedibus Athenaei, Romae, 1980. LXX,165p. ills. Cardboard with dust wrps. Signature and date on free endpaper. Series: Lyricorum Graecorum quae exstant, 5. ‘An up-to-date commentary on the so-called second book is welcome, particularly as B.A. van Groningen, declaring himself uninterested in ‘ces fades epigrammen pédérotiques’, omitted them from his otherwise useful edition, and Sir Kenneth Dover does not make as much use of them in his Greek Homosexuality as he might have. Vetta’s work, which comprises a fairly lengthy introduction, bibliography, text with critical apparatus, loci similes, and facing translation, commentary, and index verborum, may be thoroughly recommended. The introduction discusses the history of the text, the circumstances of composition, the pederastic element in archaic lyric and elegy generally, and certain aspects of poetic technique (…), and it ends with a brief account of the manuscript. There is much of interest here (…). Besides textural problems the commentary deals with interpretation, language, and literary and social questions. Illustrative material is aptly chosen and drawn from classical prose and verse and Hellenistic poetry as well as from early literature.’ (M.L. WEST in The Classical Review (New Series), 1982, p.89).
