POETAE MELICI GRAECI. Alcmanis Stesichori Ibyci, Anacreontis Simonidis Corinnae, Poetarum minorum reliquias, Carmina popularia et convivialia quaeque adespota feruntur edidit D.L. Page. Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1962. XI,623p. Original red cloth. Spine gilt titled. Edges yellowed. Ex libris glued to paste-down endpaper. Pages a bit yellowed. Bound upside down. Some smoker's smell. 'After years of reading the exiguous fragments of the lyric poets in texts heavy with supplements and conjectures, it is a luxury to have them as they are now presented, Almost every new papyrus find reminds us that poetic fragments in quotation are extremely liable to be corrupted; and in this edition hopelessly corrupt passages are presented as they should be, with frequent obeli and with conjecture either absent of in the apparatus. (...) Not that Dr. Page is unreasonably austere in the matter of conjectures and supplements. he prints a fair numbeer in his text; he gives many more in his apparatus. He has taken great pains to assign them to their original authors; and his judgment in their choice is of the highest possible quality. (...) the editor says (...) that he has excluded exegetic notes (...). But he has often referred to especially important treatments of a word or passage (...); and he himself often explains or indicates a difficulty. The book has therefore much of the value of a commentary; and the pleasure of reading it is much increased by the clarity, elegance, and liveliness of the author's Latin style. (...) the high expectations reaised by the editor's previous contributions to the study of these authors are in no way disappointed by this remarkable book, which is not likely to be superseded in any foreseeable future.'
