Four of them began as lectures, and of those four three ('The Senator as Historian', 'How Tacitus came to History', and 'Tacitus on Gaul'), treat of themes which were picked up in the book (Syme's 'Tacitus', 1957 - ND, Scrinium); the fourth, which is the hitherto unpublished final essay in this collection and was delivered in Hanover in 1961, is called 'The Political Opinions of Tacitus'. The rest are the masterly prosopographical studies, on the Lepidi, the Pisones, Fabius Justus, personal names in Annals I-VI, and Servilius Nonianus, with an expansion of what was said in the book about Tacitus' obituary notices.
