  • Die Fasten. Herausgegeben, übersetzt und kommentiert von Fr. Bömer. Band I. Einleitung, Text und Übersetzung. Band II. Kommentar. Winter, Heidelberg, 1957/58. 2 vols. 301,427p. Original blue gilt titled cloth. Vol.1: Back joints loose, causing loosening spine, pages a bit yellowed due to paper quality. ‘’The most valuable part of Bömer’s work is the second volume. His notes with their massed references have a forbidding appearance, but they are generally rewarding and sometimes about to short and authoritative essays (…). On the religious and historical background and contents of the poem he is consistently knowledgeable and informative, and he casts his net surprisingly wide (…).An edition on this scale should, however, also show a sensitive understanding of the Fasti as poetry, and should provide a text and translation which improve on the work of previous editors. Here Bömer has less to offer. His analytical approach, and his careful tracing of modifications and developments in Latin usage, can illuminate the individual word or line; but he has relatively little of value to say in appreciation of those narrative passages which constitue one of the chief attractions of the Fasti. (…) Bömer has not personally examined the manuscripts of the Fasti, but relies on the collations of others, in particular on Peeters’ report of G’s readings. Unfortunately Peeters is an erratic guide, and numerous corrections are called for in the apparatus criticus. (…) The translation is the least satisfactory part of the book.’ (D.E.W. WORMELL in The Journal of Roman Studies, 1959, pp.199-200). € 65.00 (Antiquarian)
