CUTTS, E.L.,
A Manual for the Study of The Sepulchral Slabs and Crosses of The Middle Ages.
Parker, London, 1849. VI,93,LXXXIIIp. (88 plates with engravings). Richly ills. with engravings. Original brown cloth. Blind tooling. Spine gone. Hinges weak. Binding a bit weak. With personal correction on inside free endpaper, half title and plate XLVII from E.J. Marshall. Signature from E.J. Marshall on free endpaper. 'In such a work as this, accuracy in the engraved examples is of primary importance, and care has been taken to secure this as far as possible: the author is answerable for the accuracy of those marked with his initials, which have been carefully reduced from the stones themselves, or from rubbings; others are from drawings and reduced rubbings by friends upon whose correctness the author could depend (...). This branch of archaeology has been hitherto much neglected, though it is a very interesting one, and the examples are much more numerous than is generally imagined.' (EDWARD L. CUTTS in the Preface, p.V).
