The first half of the book contains detailed analyses of many key Terentian monologues, classified under interesting headings; and the comparison of monologues parallel in one of these ways but hitherto considered in isolation can often be very revealing. (...) The second half of Denzler's book attempts to build on the results of his analyses of individual monologues. But Denzler goes too far beyond the evidence when he suggests that Terence time and time again remodelled scenes from his originals by turning other sorts of monologue into overheard ones.' (W.
