Meanwhile we are still busy entering the books of the erudite Prof. CARL DEROUX Doctor in Classical Philology and Honorary Professor at the 'Université Libre de Bruxelles'and Honorary Director and chief Editor of the 'Éditions Latomus' in our database. It will take some time before all the books purchased will be found in our database.
We still have quite a lot of books of the famous late Professor NIKOLAUS HIMMELMANN, W. GEOFFREY ARNOTT, a world authority on the Greek comic playwright Menander and of the late SIR KENNETH JAMES DOVER in stock.

- BARCHIESI, A., Il poeta e il principe. Ovidio e il discorso Augusteo. Laterza, Bari, 1994. XV,340p. Hardbound with dust wrps. Dust wrps to upper edge back slightly creased. Else fine. With signature from Prof. Carl Deroux on free endpaper. (Rare). 'This is a subtly intelligent monograph, which attempts, sensibly without expecting to reach final solutions, an evaluation of what Ovid may have intended in his references to matters dear to the heart of the 'princeps', what the 'princeps' may have been led to find in what he read. For, as B. repeatedly makes clear as his book advances, O. is out to pull the wool over Augustus' eyes, his techniques of saying one thing, perfectly acceptable on the surface, while ironically hinting at another, not so acceptable, being able to satisfy both the conventional 'augustan' and the questioning 'anti-Augustan'. B. sees in O.'s approach a mastery of verbal 'sfumatura'; to his credit let it be said that more than a touch of such 'shading' has rubbed of on his too. The texts on which B. principally bases himself are the 'Fasti' and the 'Met.'; and this is only to be expected since he is concerned to view O. where appropriate against a background of 'Realien'. (...) The subject matter of the 'Fasti' may seem to be limiting (p.66), but the calendar gives it an inbuilt licence. The formal model of the calendar invites 'separative' reading, but the poetic model of Callimachus suggests a more interconnected view (p.69). This central part of B.'s analysis is indeed so replete with telling observations on matters of detail often overlooked that precising it in a brief compass is as impossible as summarizing the 'Fasti' itself: the numerous subsections must be read and pondered one by one. (...) Through his definitve actions 'Augusto definisce non solo come un Primo ma anche come un Ultimo Uomo, definitivo, per Roma.'(p.278). To be 'anti-Augustan' is to pay the price of having to read the texts with the eyes of a delator or a mole, while the 'Augustans' are favoured with a smile and the best seats at an entertainment which, without their knowing it, includes them 'in the scenic action of the poetic language.' Thirty pages of end-notes, eight pages of bibliography, and indexes of subjects and of passages cited, enhance the value of this important book.' (J.B. HALL in The Classical Review (New Series), 1997, pp.43-46). € 115.00 (Antiquarian)

- WHITTAKER, J., Studies in Platonism and Patristic Thought. Variorum Reprints, London, 1984. XII,354p. Original blue gilt titled cloth. Signature J. Mansfeld on free endpaper. Series: Variorum Reprint CS201. 'The studies contained in this present volume date from the years 1967-1983 during which an important concern for me was the edition of the Greek text of Alcinous 'Didaskalios', now soon to appear in the collection Budé with a revised translation of the Greek text by my good friend Recteur Pierre Louis. For this sense the papers presented here may be regarded, in one sense as by-products of my editorial work, and the Middle Platonic tradition may for the same reason be considered the main focal point of their attention. Although they do not offer in any way an exhaustive treatment of the Platonic tradition and its Patristic ramifications, they do, I believe, possess a sort of unity, and I have attempted to emphasize this by presenting them here in a thematic order. I have purposely omitted from this collection papers dealing with manuscripts which have no immediate relevance to the history of Platonism, as well as papers which deal exclusively with renaissance scholarship or with other topics.' JOHN WHITTAKER in the Preface, p.XI). € 75.00 (Antiquarian)
- JAEGER, M., Livy's Written Rome. University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, 2000. XII,205p. Original blue cloth with dust wrps. The book's 'concern is with Livy's 'representation of space, monuments, and memory' and with 'the 'Ab Urbe Condita' as a spatial entity, a monument, and a lengthy act of remembering'. These interests are pursued in an introductory chapter, which discusses Livy's history as a 'monumentum', and four separate studies of individual episodes. (...) J.'s longest and perhaps most ambitious study is a reinterpretation of Livy's notorious treatment of the trials of the Scipios. In J.'s view the introduction of variant accounts (...) is not to be seen as his bowing to an unpalatable historiographical imperative, but Livy's embracing features of the historical record which allow him to advance a broader and more coherent interpretation of Scipio Africanus. Livy welcomes the uncertainty introduced by these variants because they draw attention to an historical figure who transcends any normal historical treatment. (...) This is a novel and challenging interpretation. (...) It is not possible in such a short review to respond comprehensively to the content both good and bad, of J.'s work. (...) It should be obvious that I approach Livy from a more traditional viewpoint. The major disagreement would be in our assessment of the range of literary techniques which an ancient historian might use to project meaning, and therefore the complexity of the messages which he might be able to convey. J. reckons this ability to be extremely high; more traditional critics reckon it much lower. (...) J. for the most part (she is not always transparent) attempts to discover what Livy sought to convey to his readership.' (S.J. NORTHWOOD in The Classical Review (New Series), 2000, pp.455-457). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux. € 95.00 (Antiquarian)
