  • Il carme XXV del corpus Teocriteo. Edizioni dell'Ateneo, Roma, 1962. 60p. Sewn. With corrigenda leaflet. Cover a bit grimy. Pages a bit yellowed. Name on half title. (Rare).'Idyll 25 differs from Theocritus' 'epic' poems in that, whereas 'Idylls' 22 and 24 are in the form of hymns and 'Idyll' 13 of a letter, it alone is a straight epic narrative in miniature. Scholars who have maintained Theocritean authorship for it have had recourse to the argument that, although Theocritus elsewhere adapts epic materials to new genres, here alone (...) he aimed to write pure epic. Professor Serrao, drawing extensively on the earlier researches of Frohn, Perrotta, Wifstrand, Iber, and, above all, Gow, shows that this argument is inadequate because for an overtly epic poem it is not epic enough. (...) The author, Serrao concludes, was an inept imitator (...).' (R.M. OGILVIE in The Classical Review (New Series), 1965, pp.113-14). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott. € 22.50 (Antiquarian)
