Sallust. Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt, 1975. VII,368p. Cloth. Nice copy.Aus dem Englischen übersetzt von U.W. Scholz. ''Sallust,' as Sir Ronals Syme remarks, 'is at the same time an artist, a politician, and a moralist - the elements so fused and combined that he seems all of one piece,'that is, as a roman historian (...). We have now to think of the man, hist material as he chose it, his attitude towards it, and the conditions under which, during the years of the Second Triumvirate, he presented it to readers who had shared in his political experience. Perhaps he developed in his writing - the 'Bellum Catilinae' more personally revealing, the 'Bellum Jugurthinum' setting a professional test, the 'Historiae' (if we had it entire) his mature and systematic work. The trouble is to control Sallust's evidence - by adducing associations and taking up the implications of statement or silence, so as to give a conceptual impression. This method, (...) belongs to Syme's historical technique in its subtlety. It does not make for easy reading, for it will not simplify what is complex and uncertain.Where it appears speculative, we have to watch the significant reservations: footnotes are as important as the text. The effect is strong even at negative points.' (A.H. McDONALD on the English edition in The Classical Review (New Series), 1966, pp.337-338). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable)
