Der griechische Mimus. Dokumente zur Geschichte des antiken Volkstheaters. Schünemann Universitätsverlag, Bremen, 1972. 264p. Paperback. 'Mime is a term used to cover numerous types of entertainment in the Ancient world and W. attempts in this work to discouver its essence through a study of the surviving documents. (...) The core of the whole work (...) is a close study of the development of four mime papyri P. Oxy.413, P.Lond. 1984 (...), P.Berol. 13876, P. Varsov.2, to which is appended a discussion of the mime in Apuleius Matam. X 2-12, of the adultery theme in Juvenal and Choricius and of the Laureolus mime. The texts of the papyri are given in full with a German translation and there follows discussion of the plot, characters, stage directions, distribution of roles, the nature and function of the text as it stands and the dramatic presentation. The texts are all examined from the point of view of their stage presentation and textural problems are not discussed. The results of the analysis are given in chapters on mime in the Empire, the mime enseble, acting techniques and staging. The most interesting part of the work is W.'s discussion of the papyri, in particular of P.Oxy.413.' (E.J. JORY in The Journal of Hellenic Studies, 1976, pp.196-97).
