In the first part we are given some sixty rules which are indeed an essential part of the generative phonology of Greek, but cannot by any means offer an exhaustive account of it. This may explain why a number of doubts and queries remain. (…). At the present stage or research it is difficult to know how much this is due to the nature of Greek phonology, how much to the theory used to describe it, and how much to the particular slant of this book. It would not be right to conclude on this note. This is not a definitive description of Attic Greek phonology – but theory and facts will require further consideration – but is a good step towards it: it will be difficult to ignore it.’ (A.
