  • Formalien im Briefwechsel des Plinius mit Kaiser Trajan. Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur, Mainz / Franz Steiner, Wiesbaden, 1969. 22p. Wire stitched. Series: Abhandlungen der geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Klasse, Jahrgang 1969, Nr.12. 'Professor Instinsky makes two points, as a pendant to Sherwin-White, about the way people are referred to in Pliny Book X. It is the normal rule, when one Roman citizen refers to another in a formal context, to do so by 'nomen'and cognomen', or, if the man has two 'cognomina', by those two; after the first mention you go on with cognomen only. Instinsky usually manages to find plausible explanations when Pliny fails to comply with the rule (...). The second point in this study concerns the use of 'clarissimus vir', a title given four times to senators by Pliny, when referring to them in Book X. (...) The question has to be posed 'warum gerade diese vier den Titel erhalten. (...) By Pliny's days senators perhaps normally use 'clarissimus vir' when referring to other living senators in formal contexts.' (JOHN CROOK in The Classical Review (New Series), 1972, p.222-223). € 12.50 (Antiquarian)
