  • Studien über Stellung und Gebrauch des lateinischen Relativsatzes unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Lukrez. Universitätsverlag Freiburg, Freiburg, 1974. 205p. Sewn. Cardboard. Unopened. Pages a bit yellowed, due to paper quality. Series: Seges, philologische und literarische Studien und Texte, 19. 'This judicious and scholarly investigation into the use of the Latin relative clause in its different positions (i.e. before or after its antecedent, or inserted) is intended primarily as a contribution to the study of the language of Lucretius, and herein lies its value and importance. (...) Vonlaufen has arranged his book in two parts of almost equal length. The first is a general discussion which has the special object of providing a framework for the second part, and of enabling the author to investigate Lucretian usage in relation to Early Latin on the one hand and to the practice of classical authors on the other. This framework serves its purpose well enough, but V. would be the first to agree that, as a general account of relative clauses in Latin literature, it could not claim to be more than a partial and tentative sketch. (...) Despite these reservations the first part performs a useful preparatory function. (...) When V comes to Lucretius, his treatment is so thorough and illuminating, that one wishes he had been able to devote to it a greater proportion of his book. Every passage which he quotes is carefully considered in its context, and its interpretation is scrupulously weighed. (...) The area which he examines may be a limited one, but it has a real bearing on our understanding of the sentence-structure and poetic technique of a great Roman poet.' (E. LAUGHTON in The Classical Review (New Series), 1977, pp.65-66). From the library of Professor Carl Deroux. € 29.50 (Antiquarian) ISBN: 9783727801068
