  • The Roman Army in Britain. Batsford, London, 1982. Reprint 1st ed.173,16p. ills.(B&W photographs and line drawings). Hard bound with dust wrps. Erasable pencil markings, underlinings and annotations from pp.107-124. ‘There has long been a need for a monograph that would make available to the general reader sufficient information about the Roman army, to make that body’s activity in Britain more intelligible. The book under review largely succeeds in doing just that. After a sketch of the Roman army at the time of the invasion in A.D. 43 it identifies the major changes in the number and type of units in the island throughout the Roman period. Their names, paper-strength and internal organization are next considered, and then the recruitment and conditions of service of the men in them. The various grades of officers and men from governor to ranker are surveyed in the next chapter, and the army first on campaign and then following peacetime routine comes next. A final chapter is devoted to the fourth-century army, and there are also a most useful appendix giving potted histories for the legions and auxiliary units (with fuller epigraphic references for the latter), a glossary of military terms, a select bibliography and comprehensive indexes. There is an enormous amount of information compressed into this short book, and there is much to interest readers. (….) This book is weighted on the side of the documentary evidence, particularly the epigraphic, rather than on the side of structures and artefacts.’ (BRIAN DOBSON in Britannia,1983, p.362). € 12.50 (Antiquarian) ISBN: 9780713436297
