De Conscribendis Epistolis. Critical Edition with Introduction, Translation and Annotation by Ch. Fantazzi. Brill, Leiden (...), 1989. VII,145p. Paperback. Among the numerous Renaissance treatises on the epistolary art, Vives' essay occupies an important place. It was often printed together with Erasmus' essay on the subject, to which it is in part indebted, although Vives provides more detailed information on technical aspects of ancient epistolography. The treatment is succinct and marked by fine psychological insights. The general introduction traces a brief history of the theories of letterwriting from Antiquity to the Renaissance with particular attention given to Erasmus and Vives. The Latin text with an 'apparatus critics' and 'apparatus fontium' is accompanied by a facing English translation with further explanatory notes. Vives' essay is a convenient summation of Renaissance views of the art of letterwriting, and its last pages contain a very interesting critique of the epistolary style of noted Italian humanists.
