Byzantine Missions among the Slavs. SS. Constantine-Cyril and Methodius. Rutgers University Press, New Brunswick, 1970. XVIII,484p. Original gilt titled purple cloth with dust wrps. Upper edge publisher's stained. Nice copy. 'Professor Dvornik's latest book deserves the warmest welcome as the summa of his lifelong studies in Byzantine history and its radiation to the Slavs. (...) The present work rests on a meticulous reassessment of all sources bearing on Byzantine missions to the slavs and demonstrates how inadequate they are. (...) eliminating much deadwood and hazardous specualtion, Dvornik provides balanced, indeed rather cautious, judgments. (...) Every scholar will find (...) points of disagreement but, even in disagreeing, be grateful to Dvornik for his clear discussion of them. (...) Of all the numerous problems the most delicate and central to Dvornik's theme is the position of Methodios vis-à-vis Tome and Constantinople after his brother's death and its bearing on the future of the Slav ecclesiastical language. (...) It was here (...) that one hoped that Dvornik might have something new and persuasive to say. But though he rightly stresses the spirit of cooperation between East and West in the early 880's he has no fresh interpretation to offer of Methodios' achievements as a whole.' (A. VLASTO in The Journal of Hellenic Studies, 1972, pp.255-256). (Antiquarian)  (approx. delivery time: undeliverable) ISBN: 9780813506135
