It retells the story of the outbreak and first ten years of the Peloponnesian War with obvious relish - here is a historian who takes pleasure in crafting a diverting narrative, and we should all be grateful. L. wishes to overturn the theories usually advanced to explain the origin ot the war and the peculiar strategies of its opening years. (...)
