  • The Plays of Menander. New York University Press, New York, 1971. XX,154p. Bound wrps. Wrps a little bit worn. Upper edge a bit foxed.'This excellent prose translation of 'Dyskolos', 'Samia', 'Aspis', 'Epitrpontes', and 'Perikeiromene' is available in Britain from the University of London Press. Professor Casson has revised the translations included in his 'Masters of Ancient Comedy' and added the new portions of 'Samia' and 'Aspis'. (...) The translation is accurate, readable, and lively. (...) It would be absurd to expect a translation to convey all Menander's effects exactly in Menander's way, and this one conveys admirably the most important thing, which is the verve of these fast-moving comedies. (...) The text is supplemented by perceptive stage directions which help us to appreciate many of the subtleties not caught by Casson's bare text. (...) Casson bases his translations on the texts of Handley, Austin and Körte, bus he follows none slavishly. (...). The book maintains a consistently high standard, and in that too it is faithful to Menander.' (P.G.McC. BROWN in The Classical Review (New Series), 1974, pp.128-29). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott. € 17.50 (Antiquarian)
