  • Aeschylus: Playwright Educator. Nijhoff, Den Haag, 1975. XVIII,204p. Sewn.Part One of this book formulates the theory on which the author believes Aeschylus to have based his tragedies. Specifically the first section of the book states what the author holds to be Aeschylus's stand and its compatibility with conventional Greek opinion. The second portion of the book analyses the only surviving trilogy of Aeschylus, the Oresteia. Such doctrines of pathei mathos ('men learn) wisdom by suffering') and the retributive theory of justice are illustrated. The third part of the book is devoted to the 'Prometheus Bound', and the other tragedies of Aeschuylus which have survived. The book is intended for classicists, humanists and those concerned with ethics. € 22.50 (Antiquarian)
